On a recent service visit, we were obliged to check batteries in various enclosures and if necessary, replace them. Imagine our consternation on being confronted with this situation!! One wonders about the thought processes that occurred when the ceiling installation team made this decision. It may well bring into question, their ability to sit the right way around on a toilet!! Furthermore, we are indeed grateful, that they chose not to be airline pilots, brain surgeons etc………….

Unfortunately, since our last visit, the ceiling grid had been replaced, and we were now confronted with this situation. The installers had failed to notice that this enclosure has a hinged lid! We just have to break it to the client, that it will have to be opened up.

Shame really, they had done such a good job cutting it around the box.

Sydney Australia

We have a client with many offices around the world, this one is in Australia, and we obviously could not undertake the installation. Call-outs could be challenging!

Here are a couple of PAC door controllers, using a less than conventional cable for the connections to the terminal blocks.

This is in fact speaker wire and unsurprisingly, there were “issues” with the site. We had sent them a useful manual, advising on all aspects of PAC installation, including choice of cable and orientation within the enclosure. Perhaps they did not read it!!

We offered the necessary long distance guidance and with a major rewire, all is now well.

We were approached by ATG Services in Warrington, who had many issues with the very old intercom which was attached to their larger powered sliding gate. Visitors were struggling to gain access to the site and this issue was causing more widespread consternation as this is a multi-tenant situation. As can be seen from the “before” picture, one does wonder how it worked at all and one would have to agree, it is not the most aesthetic in appearance.

We investigated the current wiring and found it to be at best, very confusing and in poor condition.

This seemed an ideal opportunity for the Videx GSM intercom which we have deployed successfully on many sites over the past few years. The appearance and functionality found great favour with the MD Pat Parkins who, following some pertinent enquiries, placed an order almost immediately.

Word had spread around the site and another resident, Eddie Render from JGR Distribution Ltd expressed considerable interest in becoming involved, as his business was definitely suffering from the intermittent intercom issue. An easy upgrade to an additional call button brought his business onto the system.

Equipment ordered and assembled, with appropriate name tags installed, the whole project was up and running in little more than half a day.

Both Pat and Eddie are delighted with the appearance and functionality, peace and harmony have returned to this little backwater of Warrington.

This is an example of before and after Mikki Tiamo has been to a job.

This is what we, at Access-Ability like to leave our jobs like after we’ve finished.

Mikki doesn’t like, poorly designed server cabinets and racks, be they large or small.

Mikki doesn’t like, cabinets and racks with wires which look like spaghetti. Wiring all over the place.

Mikki doesn’t like, when she turns up for jobs and the server cabinet looks like it’s been put together in the dark by someone wearing mittens.

Mikki does like, spending 10-20 minutes re-arranging things.

Mikki does like, making cabinets look aesthetically pleasing to the eye.

and most of all…

Mikki does like, making cabinets and racks easier to work on. Whether that be for Mikki, another Access-Ability engineer, an engineer from another company, or even the customer themselves.

This is the latest before and after Mikki cabinet. She says it’s not perfect but it’s much better than when she first saw this cabinet.

Another challenge for Barry!

This Videx Century One intercom system has been in for many years, installed by others, we might add. Now we have to make some modifications to meet the client’s new requirements.

As the tech support engineer at Videx said, “good luck with that” when he saw the photograph. This is one of those classic poke and hope scenarios, where you endeavour not to make it worse as soon as you touch it.

We are happy to report that all is now working, but unfortunately, we have not been instructed to sort the mess out properly, so let’s hope it continues to work.

I see a lot of server cabinets and I see a lot of badly thrown together server cabinets but this one is bad on so many levels.

Firstly, the patch panel is in upside down and right at the bottom of the cabinet. It’s only just accessible. We can only think that it’s so low down so you can’t see it and it’s a tangled web of wires.

Although not a sin the wiring is all different colours and different lengths and when I opened the cabinet door they all fell out.

There is a shelf in there as well it’s just underneath everything and needs fixing in.

Our client has asked us to tidy this up next time we’re there so watch this space.

Several people including other companies, had tried to identify the fault on this intercom system. On investigation, it was clear that there was a lack of power and the main problem was locating the PSU. Many hours were spent searching for the missing device, then Barry took up the challenge. Image 1 shows the perfectly innocent entry panel and the second image shows the panel removed to reveal the backbox. Nothing obvious so far then.

Having exhausted all other possibilities, Barry decided to remove the backbox, revealing a fairly noxious array of broken twigs, obviously an old nest, along with a significant quantity of bird poo!

Once cleaned up, the missing power supply was revealed and it was indeed, faulty.

Once a new unit was installed, in a much more engineer-friendly location, the system became fully functional and of course, future maintenance will not be so challenging.

All was now well and happy residents. The Bloodhound strikes again!!
